Meal Time is Family Time

Dinner time is the perfect time for families to get to know each other better. That may sound like an odd statement, but with the busy lifestyles that many families lead, it’s no surprise that family members have to make time to be together.  What better occasion than while they’re all sitting in the same spot enjoying a good meal?

How can you instill in your children the importance of sharing the dinner table with family? What tips can you use today that will help your family eat healthier and enjoy each other’s company for years to come?

Start early. That doesn’t mean eat your meal at 4pm. Set the example when your kids are little. If you start eating your meals together as a family when the children are small it will become a habit for later years.

Involve your children in the meal preparation. Let them help you wash vegetables or if they’re older kids let them cut veggies. Even at an early age, kids can help set the table or stir ingredients.  Clearing the table is a good ‘chore’ for little kids to share with the rest of the family too.

Children have busy schedules full of events and activities, so although it may be hard to sit down at the dinner table every night, try to share dinner together as often as you can.

During the actual meal time, engage your family members, especially your kids, in conversation that will interest them.  Many families agree that dinner time is not a good time to discuss stressful topics, so save that for a more appropriate time if possible.

Another tip that will help make dinner time meaningful for the family is to turn the television and cell phones off and pay attention to each other.  Ask your children questions about their day, and share your day’s events with them as well.

During busy week nights, make the meal as easy as you can. Dinner does not have to be a big event, so look for recipes and quick dinner ideas that your family will enjoy.

Even though it may be hard to get everyone in your family together every night to share the dinner meal, eating together as a family will strengthen bonds and help family members get to know each other better and create a happier home.
